Installing Soffit and Fascia

Our little birdies are still growing.  See them over the top edge of the nest?

Speaking of wildlife, check out this crazyness that Jesse and I have seen in the back yard where we are living now:

The roof is here.

One of the two and a half piles of cedar shakes waiting to be put on the roof.

The finished end of the porch roof.
Last evening we started putting up the soffit.  Seems like this is going to be another stage that will take a long time!

I saw this on the floor yesterday:
And thought that could only mean one thing...
We have babies in our house!

View of the river hills from our back porch.

Porch Ceiling

 Cherry pegs

Last evening Jesse finished the ceiling in the rain.

Today he completed the finishing touches.
 Copper end piece.
Someone else thought our home was cozy enough to make their own:
Jesse also built the last pent roof to tie the porch roof in with the mastersuite.
I spend the day cleaning the whole house, stacking and re-stacking piles of lumber, sweeping the floors... loading the soffit and fascia from the barn to the wagon, then from the wagon to the house... loading the wagon back up with lumber to be stored for future use.
Then I took a dog nap.

Look at our peach tree!!

From corn crib to porch ceiling.

The back porch will have a metal roof on it and we were thinking it would be nice to put something under the roof that would be nice to look at when you are sitting on the porch.  The big oak beams will be exposed, but in between them will be space with something to do.
Over the last few weeks (what felt like months)  we have been painting the soffit and fascia in Sid and Jan's barn, staring at an old corn crib that lined the one barn wall.
 That was our answer!
Sid and Jan graciously allowed us to carefully remove the old barn boards to create our porch ceiling.
Jesse spent today removing the boards,
and I spent the day removing the old, hand pounded nails from the boards.

These beautiful, old boards will line our porch ceiling and instantly give the space character.
After a days work, we aren't sure we have enough yet, but we have a good start!

There were a bunch of these little 'latches' on the corn crib doors that I may put to use in some wall art for the new house...
I am excited for new possibilities!

The porch!

One day I went to work...
and came home to a porch!
I am so impressed with Jesse's craftsmanship with the hand chiseled touches that make this porch so inviting!

Those feet will be a perfect touch between the brick floor and the wooden post.
This joint will have wooden, cherry pegs to finish it out.

We are finished painting

the soffit and fascia!!!... for now...
We will still have to put a final coat on when it is installed... but I'm still happy that process is almost done!
Jan and Rachel helped finish the painting last weekend.
We used a soy-based paint for the final color and it was interesting to paint with.  The consistency was like pudding!

Last weekend Jesse finished laying the stone in the back corner for the porch post to sit on.
Finding the perfect stone.
